Relaunching the xLab

After a summer of renovation, the xLab is now back online and ready for makers!

The renovation truly transformed the room into a dedicated makerspace. Tools and supplies are now easily available, all of the equipment is out and ready for use, and there is plenty of workspaces for students to make some amazing projects. The expansion allows 15-20 students to work in the space at a single time, which means an entire class can come and work on a project together. We also are moving several clubs (Robotics, Girls Who Code and the student tech team) into the xLab.

We had an Open House earlier this week to celebrate the new space, and had a great turnout of faculty and students. There were several fun projects going on at Open House to showcase the variety of tools available in the xLab:

  • We created and cut custom stickers on the Cameo vinyl/paper cutter

  • We designed, cut and etched custom acrylic shapes on the Epilog laser cutter that we turned into pins.

  • We built tiny robots using toothbrushes and small motors.

Though we are still unpacking and settling in the space, we are open for business! We have daily Open Lab hours (posted on the website and the door of the xLab) and we also started to hold certification sessions during Common Classroom this week. Hope to see some amazing projects in motion soon!
